Justice of the Peace, Kent County- 1863, 1866, 1869, 1870, 1874, 1878. The lumber mill on section 22 was erected by it's present owner J.R. Squires, in June 1774 at the cost of $4,000.00. It was then comprised a shingle mill which was operated in connection with a saw mill until Feb. 1881, when it was moved to Mancelona, Antrim County. The lumber factory employed about 8 men and cuts 15,000 feet per day. In 1880 it manufactured 10,000,000 feet.
J.R. Squires, an old and respected pioneer of Kent County was born in Yates County, N.Y. on June 25, 1825. His parents Gideon and Esther Squires were also N.Y. people. His grandfather Zebulon Deming served through the Revolutionary War. Mr. Squires passed his early years on his father's farm, and attending the common schools. In 1852, he came to Courtland, where he followed the pursuits of farming until 1871, when engaged in lumbering, his present business. He enlisted in the Civil War, Company F, 21 Regiment, Mich. Vol. Infantry, of the late war Dec. 20, 1863 and participated in the battles of Bentonville, Averyboro, and other minor engagements. He accompanied General Sherman on his long and toilsome march to sea and was honorably discharged July, 1865. Oct. 20, 1849, he married Emeline Briggs, daughter of Lyman and Cordelia Briggs, and a native of Jerusalem, Yates County., born April 20, 1828. They have two children, Charles W. and James G. Politically he was a Democrat. He served the people of Courtland in Nelson Township as a Justice of Peace for twenty years and was Highway Commissioner 10 years. His farm of 240 acres was located on sections 14, 22, and 23.
