Barbara Pitts-Lester, 86, of Addison, TX, peacefully passed away on April 8, 2021 at Prestonwood Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home.

Barbara was born on Wednesday, May 30, 1934 to Frederick and Dorothy Costa in the borough of Queens in the bustling city of New York. After Barbara graduated from high school, she went on to receive her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Queens College in New York. Immediately following her graduation, Barbara began her career as an elementary school teacher for the NYC Board of Education and taught grades K-6. While teaching school, Barbara continued her education and in 1966, she obtained a Master's degree from Queens College in Reading and Language Arts Instruction. In 1972, Barbara received another Master's degree in Supervision and Administration from her alma mater, Queens College. By 1974, Barbara had become an Assistant Principal with the City of New York's Board of Education. She continued her career in education and became the Director of Reading and Language Arts and finally, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the City of New York's Board of Education.

After a career spanning 30 years, Barbara retired from work, but not from her love of education. Barbara was a member of several organizations in which she completed many hours of volunteer work. She was a member of the American Society for Training and Development, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and a member of the New York Association of Black Educators. Barbara was recognized by the NYC Board of Education for her work in developing a reading curriculum which was adopted as the curriculum standard for NYC public elementary schools.

Barbara married George Pitts early in life and he preceded her in death. On September 27, 2007, Barbara married Lamar Lester in Dallas, TX and they remained married until her death.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband Lamar, her sister Joyce, her niece Kimberly, grandniece and grandnephew, five step-children, four grandchildren, her goddaughter and a cherished network of friends.
