John Martin Hasstedt died in Spokane, WA, November 10, 2014. He was born in Denver, Colorado in 1925. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marguerite "Peggy" Hasstedt of Spokane, WA; Bob Hasstedt; Connie Weiseth (Mark); Jim Hasstedt (Roberta); Dave Hasstedt (Corrinne); Carol Plischke (Randy); ten grandchildren and his brother Byron Hasstedt of Buena Vista, CO. John graduated with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Denver in 1947. He and Peggy were married in Denver that year, then moved to Connecticut. They came to Spokane in 1953 from Billings, MT when he was transferred by the Carter Oil Co. He left Carter Oil and operated several businesses in Spokane, including the Rees Hall Oil Company, and a number of service stations, and the Misa Precast Terrazzo in Monterey, Mexico. John became an agent of the New York Life Insurance company in the fall of 1968 and retired in December of 1998. He was a life member of the New York Life Honor Club and a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He was a Charter Life Underwriter and Charter Financial Consultant, and was a member of the Spokane Estate Planning Council. John was active in the Spokane Fuel Dealers Association, the Spokane Retail Credit Association and the Downtown Spokane Optimistic Club, as well as being Distinguished Governor of Optimistic International for the Pacific NW District. He and Peggy joined the Manito United Methodist Church in 1954 and were active members for over 50 years, and he was on the board of the Rockwood Retirement Communities for many years. John enjoyed bird hunting and fishing, and loved nothing better than spending time at their second home on Coeur d'Alene Lake, Idaho with children and grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Rockwood Retirement Communities - South Hill, in the Main Lounge at the Ridge, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 15th. In lieu of flowers, your support of Rockwood Residents' Foundation Residents' Assistance Fund or Optimist International would be appreciated.
