Kathleen G. Tiesner, age 76, died Sunday April 11, 2021 at her home in Stanton. She was born November 25, 1944 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Henry and Helen (Zischek) Mathisen.

Kathleen's life journey started with two loving parents as we all do. She also has a sister, Karen. Three short years later, they lost their mom in a tragic car accident. Two weeks ago, I asked her who she most wants to see in Heaven. She had many to choose from. Her dad, her son, Grant or her best friend, Joan. She said, "I want to meet my mom." She had not spoken about her in years. The challenges in Kathleen's life have made her stronger over the years. Her husband, Tom, and her daughter, Christine, have helped keep her strong through this last journey.

Kathleen's life was her children, getting her college degree, and teaching special ed kids. After the birth of her son, at age 30, she went to Felician College and then Northeastern College ending with a Masters in Special Education. For 25 years, she taught special ed kids in Chicago and Sanibel Island. She retired to Stanton, Michigan, with her husband, Tom, of 54 years.

She enjoyed traveling to many countries such as Costa Rica, Canada, Paris, England, Ireland and many more. She was liked by all wherever she traveled.

She loved to cook, to dance to music, attending live plays in Chicago and everywhere in between. In her retirement years, she learned to golf and enjoyed that too. And I know this to be true because I was there with her. We will miss and remember her always.

For 30 years, Kathleen has battled with cancer on 3 separate occasions. This last battle was over 18 months. Her positive mental attitude during this last cancer battle kept her body fighting Stage 4 adenocarcinoma that was diagnosed in September 2019. She hung on way beyond her expiration date. I hope her strength will give others something to measure up to in their own lives.

Kathleen is survived by her loving husband, Tom; daughter, Christine (Daniel) Kernes; and grandchildren, Jack Kernes, age 14, and Ryan Kernes, age 13.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 AM on Thursday, April 15 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Greenville with Rev. James Wyse as celebrant, followed by burial at North Sidney Cemetery. Upon completion of the graveside service, a luncheon will take place at Winter Inn, Greenville. Those unable to attend the service, may view Mass virtually via https://www.facebook.com/saintscjm/live/.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to direct it to Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 or via www.t2t.org.
