Milton Arnold "Joe" Henderson, Jr. of Nashville, TN entered into Heaven on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Joe was an honor graduate of both Howe Military School in Howe, IN and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
He served in the U.S. Army in WWII as second lieutenant, and in the Air Force in the Korean War as a captain.
He was the sales manager of Coca Cola Bottling Company in Macon, GA, and was offered to be the General Manager of two other plants before accepting an offer to work as a U. S. Field Representative for The Gideons International in 1954. Two years later, he became the Executive Director of The Gideons and held that position for 31 years. He oversaw relocating The Gideons headquarters from Chicago, IL to Nashville, TN. In 1987, he retired and was appointed Executive Director Emeritus. He continued taking international assignments until 2010. In 1995, his book, Sowers of the Word, a 95 year history of The Gideons, was published.
Joe was an avid tennis player until age 82. He was a long-standing member of The Donelson Fellowship, and before that The Woodmont Bible Church where he served as an elder and taught a Sunday School Class for many years.
Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Edwards.
He is survived by his beloved and faithful wife, Betty, and two sons: George and Philip Henderson; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; 3 step-children: Jim and Ed Harnage and Julie Byrd; and 5 step-grandchildren.
Viewing will be at The Donelson Fellowship on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 2:00PM until 3:00PM. A Celebration of Life will begin at 3:00PM with a graveside to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
