Mr. Penning was born in Wakefield on April 24, 1938. He was the son of James and Anita (Carder) Penning, grew up in the Mattapan section of Boston and had lived in Leominster for the past 45 years. He graduated from Milton High School and received an associate degree in fire science. Bill served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He entered the Leominster Fire Department as a call man on May 1, 1964, and joined the permanent ranks on Sept. 26, 1965. He was the driver on Engine 2 on Group 4 when he retired on Aug. 2, 1994.
For many years, Bill owned and operated Penning Bottle Gas in Leominster and had worked for several years at Hathaway Memorials in Leominster. He was a member of Local 1841-Firefighters Union and Leominster Firefighter's Relief Association, serving many years as president and secretary. He was also a member of Hose 4 Association and a longtime fire department chairman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was a member of St. Leo's Church in Leominster. Bill loved to travel, spend time on Cape Cod, fishing and digging for clams and quahogs.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, a daughter, three sons, a sister and 10 grandchildren.
