Willis Dowden, 71, Barnard, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at his home in rural Barnard.
Born April 5, 1925, in Maryville, to Forrest H. and Mary Elizabeth Pride Dowden, he was a farmer.
He married Cleta Darlene Wilson, April 29, 1948, in Maryville.
A lifetime resident of the area, Mr. Dowden was a graduate of Myrtle Tree rural elementary school and a 1943 graduate of Maryville High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an instructor in Jacksonville, Flordia. He received the AM Theater Ribbon, a good conduct medal, and the Victory Medal.
He was a member of Barnard Christian Church, Barnard, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher, church superintendent, church board member, deacon and elder. He served on the South Nodaway School Board, Nodaway County Soil Board and White Cloud Township Board. He served as Nodaway County Commissioner; was appointed Nodaway County Assessor by Missouri Governor Ashcroft; and was active in the Republican party for many years.
He was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Willis Dowden; two daughters, Janet Eilene Dowden and Virginia Ann Dowden; one sister, Lula Hilton; and one brother, Forrest Dowden, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Cleta of rural Barnard; two daughters, Judy Slump of Henderson, Iowa, and Jody Lager of Barnard; one brother, Willard Dowden of Pickering; one sister-in-law, Helen Thompson Jr.; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, at Barnard Christian Church, Barnard, with the Rev. Pat Sampson officiating.
Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville.
