Jack was born in Tulare on February 8, 1925, the second son of Warren C, Riley and Helen Riley. His older brother, Jerry, died in the Army In World War II.
Between 1943 and 1946, Jack served in the Army's 25th Infantry, in the Philippines and in Japan, where he was befriended by a Japanese family. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
Jack lived most of his life in Chico. In 1950 he and his mother Helen bought a small cabin in Butte Meadows; it remains a joyful family getaway.
For some years he worked at TriCo Almonds. He went to work, then, at the Chico Post Office as a letter carrier, retiring after 20 years, in 1986, at age 60.
He enjoyed hard work, fishing, hunting, gardening, canning the fruit from trees on his property. He rode a motorcycle to work, had a boat for awhile. At rest he enjoyed reading, Scrabble, TV, at various times in his life.
A master craftsman, Jack's avocation was salvaging and restoring old furniture, both for our home and for many others in the area. We thought of him, always, as our "Jack of All Trades."
When he died at home, out of pain and peacefully, he had been in Hospice's care for 17 days. We are grateful for all the graceful care Jack received from Hospice.
John C. (Jack) Riley is survived by his wife Nancy, by two sons, Michael (Tamie) and Patrick (Nancy), and three grandchildren.
All arrangements were handled by Brusie Funeral Home. He is interred at Chico Cemetery. No services.
