After the death of her father, Frank, in Galena, Kansas, in a mining incident, her mother, Mary Klein Dor, married James Pendergast.

Mary and her husband James lived in Kansas City, until their deaths, Mary's death occurring in 1905, and his in 1911.

Anna married Frank Alms in 1879. Their home in 1880 was in Kansas City, Missouri. The couple lived in Kansas City through 1900 and a bit beyond. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, they moved to California. Their daughter, Ethel, married Erle Shirey in 1906 in Kansas City, and probably Annie and Frank moved to California to be near their only known child. All of them were in the Los Angeles area by 1910.

After her husband's death in 1915, Annie continued to live in Los Angeles, however she moved to the town of Hermosa Beach and began working there.

In 1930, when Annie was living in Hermosa Beach, she reported that her parents had been born in Alsace-Lorraine. At the time, she was the proprietor of an apartment house.
