Carolyn "Maxine" Simmons, 76, of Staunton and formerly of Monterey, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Augusta Health.

She was born November 8, 1943 in Monterey, a daughter of the late James Randolph and Edith Jane (Swearengin) Rexrode. On May 13, 1959, she married Charles Williams Simmons.

A seamstress, Maxine had worked at Aileen and Hanover Shoe Company. She was also a member of Monterey Presbyterian Church and the Highland County VFD Ladies Auxiliary. Maxine enjoyed traveling and attending Bluegrass festivals. Above all, she loved visiting with family on Sunday afternoons. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Wanda Gail Puffenbarger and husband, Bill of Augusta Springs; son, C.R. Simmons of Staunton; grandchildren Melissa Tipton, Brian Puffenbarger, Sarah Michael, Eric Puffenbarger, Ashley See and Justin Botkin; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Stanley of Mt. Solon and Brenda Puffenbarger of Staunton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Charlotte Botkin, Barbara Mitchell and Betty Lotts; and brothers Bub and Rusty Rexrode.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, March 21, 2020 at her former residence on Airport Terrace Road, Monterey.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 267, Monterey, Va. 24465.
