Although she was somewhat eclipsed by her very famous sister Ellen Terry, Marion Terry had a successful career spanning half a century, playing the leading roles in more than 125 plays. Her first stage appearance was as Ophelia in Hamlet at the Theatre Royal, Manchester in 1873. She became a protege of W S Gilbert appearing in many of his plays. In 1884 she replaced her sister Ellen, who was ill, as Viola in Twelfth Night at the Lyceum, and she later toured the
provinces with Henry Irving in Faust. In 1908 and 1909 Marion gave performances in America and Canada. 1923 saw her act in her last play before she retired through ill health. She lived in Paddington and died at her home there. She was buried in St Albans next to the grave of her sister Florence Maud Terry (Mrs William Morris) who died on 15 March 1896. She was also an actress before her marriage.
