Henry Louis Mitchell Jr., 89, of New Haven, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, March 22, 2021. He passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones.

He was born on September 13, 1931, in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Henry L. Mitchell Sr. and Virginia C. Lindemeyer Mitchell.

Henry was raised in Louisville, KY, and graduated from Saint Xavier High School. He attended the University of Louisville and then completed studies in Philosophy at Saint Mary's College. He studied Theology at Saint Mary's Seminary and was ordained a Catholic priest in May of 1958.

Henry spent most of his life in the service of others, but in his free time, he enjoyed gardening and traveling. However, he was most content at home, working on his family farm. He was also an avid reader and history enthusiast.

He continued his service to others, even after death, by donating his body for education and research to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He gave of himself to the very end in order to continue to impact others beyond his final heartbeat. His love endures and continues to give. He was a member of Saint Catherine's Catholic Church, in New Haven, KY.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Tony, Urban, Donald (Betty), and John Mitchell; one sister, Mildred (Denver) Butler, and a beloved cousin and best friend, Mary Willa Schaeffer.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Anna Darlene Mitchell, of New Haven. Although Henry had no biological children of his own, he loved and raised Donna Dugan, Joseph Mitchell, and Dorothy Mitchell-Gilmore (Wes), and delighted in his eight grandchildren.

He is also survived by four siblings: Virginia (Don) Gaff, Mary Ann (Raymond) Barry, Willa Mitchell, Jerry (Cynthia) Mitchell, and two sisters-in-law: Marilyn and Janet Mitchell. He also had many cherished nieces and nephews.

Private interment will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery, in Louisville, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Vincent DePaul, in Bardstown.

A Memorial Mass will be held on April 24, 2021, at 11:00 am
