Laura Afton Lowe McArthur was born Wednesday, September 23, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John and Matilda Lowe. She attended Blaine Elementary and Granite High School.

She married Ray McArthur, her life-long love and partner, on April 9, 1942 in Elko, Nevada. Ray preceded her in death on December 27, 1999.

Afton loved her family and made our home a welcome place for anyone who wished to come in, offering food, drink, and friendship. She loved hockey, especially youth hockey. She went to all of her son's and grandsons' games faithfully.

She was a season pass holder for the Golden Eagle Hockey team for all the years they were in Salt Lake. Afton set aside time to spend special, one-on-one time, with all of her grandchildren, giving each of them very special memories of fun and her special love. Her health declined the last three years, and she was unable to be as active as she had done for so many years.

She was a loyal friend to many. One of her special qualities was being a very good listener, she would listen to anyone who had troubles or turmoil in their lives, helping so many to cope with their fears and troubles. She rarely complained to anyone. Her ability to listen intensely, with such genuine interest, was the reason she was so wise to life.

Afton worked for IHC Home Health Care, starting in her sixty's and worked many years for them. She developed a special friendship with the Mackies. She lovingly cared for Mrs. Mackie, who was afflicted with MS. Afton was always offering her help to anyone or any cause. She gave to others far more than she took for herself. She was active in the Primary and the church library at the Riverside Ward.

Afton passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Highland Care Center in Holladay, Utah to join her soul mate and family members in a joyous reunion. Five generations of her family surrounded her at her bedside to comfort her and express their love for her. She resided at 309 North 1000 West in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah at the time of her death.

Mom was survived by her children, Gene McArthur of Lansing, MI, Karen (Charlie) Pola of Taylorsville, Laura Kendall of West Jordan, Dean McArthur of Salt Lake and Jill (Robert) Hubertz of West Jordan; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alta Morrow and Beth Lowe and special friend, Lou Cooke. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; daughter, Peggy Deal McArthur; sons, Terry and Randy McArthur; grandson, Jeff Pola; great-grandsons, Tyson and Bryton Pola; brothers, Victor and Clarence Lowe; sisters, Alice Platt, Mary Cowlishaw, Hazel Nemeth, and Norma Nielsen.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, November 2, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Estates Mortuary located at 6500 South Redwood Road (1700 West) in Taylorsville. A viewing was held on Thursday, November 1, 2007 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services.
Afton was laid to rest following the conclusion of the Funeral Services in the Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery.
REST IN PEACE.
