Thomas Owen McBride 1930 - 2021

Died peacefully at home on April 6. Loving and devoted husband of Helen (deceased) and fun father of Michael (Nancy Scarcella), Patrick (Jean, nee Flaherty), Martin (Mary, nee Walton), Owen (Dr. Nancy, nee Riley), Kate (Joseph McCusker), Molly Steen (Paul, deceased) and Tim (Kate, nee Schmotzer), grandfather of Allison (Jordan Alter), Erin (Mark Ventura), Mike, Aidan, Abigail, Annie, Megan, Alec, Dan, Lucy, Thomas, Jack, Lee, Charlie, Dodge, Maggie, Annabelle, Brendan, Will, Dez and Tony and great-grandfather of Mark and Jackson. Brother of Charles, Joseph, Annabelle, Maureen, John and Jerry (all deceased). Brother-in-law to Charles MacMillan (Rose deceased), Doreen, Winnie, Marie, Tom McGinty, Fred Kramer (all deceased) Nancy McBride and Beverly McBride. And as you might have guessed with all those siblings and in-laws, Tom was the proud uncle and great-uncle of many.

Tom was born to Irish immigrants (the late Annie McLernon and Patrick McBride) on East 69th Street in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood, attended St. Agnes Grade School, rode the street car to Holy Name High School (1948), served in the US Air Force (1949), graduated from John Carroll University (1955) and Kent State University (1970).
Tom loved his wife, Toots, fully and daily. He was a fun-loving prankster and engaged dad, an educator and principal in the Cleveland Public School System, a grass-roots community activist and Lakewood City councilman committed to a fairer and more just world, who loved all things in nature, but definitely wildflowers on the Ridge most of all. He was always positive, greeted each new day with energy and visible joy. Whether on the campaign trail, the abandoned road at the Farm, the Lake porch or in a car packed with seven rambunctious kids (and whomever else he and Helen had invited on the vacation) Tom was 100% present. Tom led an active Christian infused, Cursillo renewed life praying daily. He lovingly and consistently reached out to others in need, inviting them into his life, his heart, and his home.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Malachi Church (West 25th St. and Detroit Ave.) Thursday, April 15 at noon and will be live streamed: http://tinyurl.com/ThomasMcBride. Social distancing will be observed and face masks required. Seating is limited. A celebration of Tom's life, his humor and goodness is planned for July 9, 2021.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Little Brothers and Sisters of the Eucharist, 3675 West 165th St., Cleveland, OH 44111 or the Poor Clare's Monastery, 3501 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, OH 44111.
