Funeral Wed. for Town Founder, R. M. Thorp
R. M. Thorp, early day resident and one of the founding father of the town of Eldorado, was buried in Altus Wednesday after succumbing to an illness that has lasted nine months. Thorp died Monday morning.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the the First Methodist church with Rev. LeRoy Mamalgale??, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the Altus cemetery. The Merritt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Thorp was born November 8, 1869 at Marshall, Mo. He moved to what is now Oklahoma with his parents in 1891, and grew to be one of the builders of this area.
The family settled in a little town called Poe, 4 1/2 miles northwest of Eldorado. He was postmaster there and was interested in a general store there.
He was married May 13, 1894, to Miss Ida Blair. The couple celebrated their 57the wedding anniversary, May 13. They established a grocery store until moving in 1897 to Eldorado where Thorp established a grocery store. He later purchased a drug store with Keary Wynn, selling his grocery to Summers and Tobert.
When the Eldorado townsite moved 1/2 mile south and 1/2 mile east, the Thorp and Wynn drug store was the first business building on the new site. Later the frame building was exchanged for a stone structure, which is the present Corner Drug in Eldorado.
In 1904 Thorp sold his drug store and established a real estate and insurance business in Eldorado. Land title records show that Thorp at one time owned or sold at least 60 percent of the land in the western part of the county.
He moved to Altus with Mrs. Thorp in 1927 establishing a real estate firm there and maintaining a branch in Eldorado until 1934. He was vice president of the First National Bank of Eldorado from about 1910 until 1945; a 32nd degree Mason, and while at Eldorado was chairman of the school board for 12 years. He was active in the Methodist church as well as in civic and lodge work.
After moving to Altus, he had been a steward in the Methodist church, a member of the Shriners, ---- and WOW. In 1948 he was state commander of the council, Masonic lodge, the oldest living state official.
Survivors included Mrs. Thorp of the home; a daughter; Mrs. A R Miller of Ada; a son, Blair Thorp, Kim; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Pearl King of San Marcus, Tex.
Members of the Eldorado Masonic lodge were to be in charge of the graveside service for Thorp. The Altus lodge assisted.
