Graveside service will be held directly afterwards for those who wish to attend.
Larry is preceded in death by his Father Jack Charles Hicks Jr. He is survived by his Mother Erma Hicks; his sisters Sandy Kestner and her husband (Gary); and Debra Grant and her husband (Craig); and his brother Jack Charles Hicks III. "Papa Larry" is also survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 magnificent years Gail Hicks, his 3 wonderful Daughters; Amy Palmer and her husband (John); Vicki Olavarria and her husband (JR), and Kristi Cannon and her husband (David); Grandchildren Austin Cannon and his wife (Beth), Morgan Hamilton and her husband (Austin), Ethan Cannon, Emily Olavarria, Taryn Cannon, and Joseph Olavarria; and Great Grandchildren Brycen Hiers, Piper and Paicen Cannon and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was born in Miami, Florida on February 24, 1946. He was the oldest of four children. The family moved to Levy County from Davie, Florida in 1962. Larry grew up hunting, fishing, playing ball and working on and driving anything with wheels. He attended school at Bronson HS and was drafted into military service in 1967 where he served his country in the US Army as an equipment mechanic. He distinguished himself as an expert marksman and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Bronze service stars, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, and earned 2 Overseas Service Bars.
Upon his return from Vietnam, he married Gail on his Birthday in 1967 and started his family. Larry drove trucks and operated heavy equipment to make a living. He soon joined GRU and embarked on his career as a linesman, and ended his career as an Energy Service Supervisor. Larry worked with GRU for 28 years and ended his employment in 2014.
Larry was not one to stay still unless NASCAR was on TV. As a young man he was a race car enthusiast and raced at the track in Bronson. He loved his airboat and time on the water but he was always happiest in the woods. Whether he was riding thru the hunt club, sitting in a tree, setting traps, casting hounds on a buck or listening to them run a fox, each event drew equal amounts of enjoyment from him. He loved a good Bluegrass song, or any song with a fiddle or a banjo.
His lasting legacy will be his love for his family and friends. He was an extremely proud dad who loved his 3 girls and their families. Larry was always kind at heart and spoke to people in an unassuming way that made you feel glad you were there near him. What a great example of a life well lived.
Services for Larry will be held on Monday, April 12, 2021 at the Lighthouse Word Church in Chiefland with Pastor Carol Kearns officiating. The service begins at 12:00 PM with a visitation an hour prior. Burial will follow at the Running Bear Cemetery in Chiefland, Florida.
Knauff Funeral Home of Williston is honored to serve the Hicks family during their time of transition.
