In 1878, Dud married Sarah Anderson, who had grown up on an adjacent farm. In 1883, Dud purchased a farm three miles east and one-half mile north of Vinland. Here they raised eight children, two of whom died in infancy.
In addition to farming traditional crops, Dud also raised fruit. The 1895 Kansas Agricultural census shows that his farm had 100 apple, 20 peach, 10 cherry and 10 plum trees. He also had an extensive vineyard and sold grape vine cuttings to nurseries. He may have been one of the Hoskinson Brothers frequently mentioned in the Vinland neighborhood news of the Lawrence newspaper as shipping carloads of apples from the Vinland depot.
In the early 1900s, Sarah contracted tuberculosis, the same dread disease that killed her sister and two brothers. Seeking a cure, Dud and Sarah and their three youngest children went to Las Vegas, New Mexico. They lived there about four years when Sarah died in 1908. After her death, Dud and the children returned to Kansas. Dud continued to live on his farm in the Harmony district northeast of Vinland until his death in 1943.
