Cleo D. "Ben" Cowan, 85, of Harrisville died May 1, 2005, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Harrisville, the son of the late George W. and Augusta Sinnett Cowan.

Ben was retired from Walker Manufacturing, Parkersburg, where he worked in quality control. In his later years, he was part owner of Ben and Barb's Auction House in Harrisville. He was a charter member of the Deerwalk Volunteer Fire Department and former Wood County Chairman of the Republican Party.

He is survived by eight sons, Dexter Lee Cowan of Cocoa, Fla., Earl C. Cowan of Rock Hill, S.C., Michael Todd Davis of Waverly, Walter Mace of Sistersville, Duane Mace of Coolville, Ohio, Dwight Mace of Parkersburg, Gary Sutphin of Parkersburg and Larry Sutphin of Vienna; three daughters, Sharon V. Shriner of Parkersburg, Shelby E. Eldreth of Canton, Ohio, and Evelyn "Penny" Todd of Waverly; two brothers, Emery Cowan of Massillon, Ohio, and Omar Cowan of Belpre; two sisters, Oma Jean Wilson of Massillon and Leona Ward of Grantsville; 30 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Barb Richmond.

Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Cowan; four brothers, Dennis, Olan, Lawrence and George Cowan Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Simons and Gladys Iring.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with the Rev. Roger Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrisville I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Family will receive guests 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
