Marie Deatherage
(1938-2021)

Public visitation for Marie Deatherage was held Wednesday, April 7, with family present, at Huber-Benson Funeral Home. Private services were held Thursday at El Reno Cemetery. Marie passed away at home on Easter Sunday, April 4, with family at her side following a brief illness.

Born Ruth Marie Ferguson in El Reno on Nov. 4, 1938, she lived with her family in Kansas and Arizona. Upon returning to El Reno, the family purchased a washing machine. It was delivered to the house by a "tall, skinny kid" named Don Deatherage, and she decided on the spot that he was the one for her.

They graduated El Reno High School together in 1956 and were married on Sept. 1, 1960.

Marie was a member of First Presbyterian Church in El Reno, where she taught Sunday school and participated in Evening Circle.

She volunteered as a poll worker in the 1970s and took part in countless fundraisers for local causes until arthritis slowed her down in the 1980s. She loved all forms of science fiction, especially the Star Wars and Godzilla franchises. A tall woman in her prime, she enjoyed gardening, reading, and being awakened from slumber to attack the city of Tokyo.

Marie was preceded in death by her younger sister, Sue Mohageri; her firstborn daughter, Donna Marie Deatherage; and her husband of 60 years, Don, who passed on March 26.

She is survived by her sister, Dr. Judy Kay Salinas of Norman; two children, Delia Lamb of Bartlesville and husband, John, and Matt Deatherage of El Reno; and two grandchildren, Christopher Lamb of Bradenton, Fla., and wife, Merissa, and Debby Marshall of Norman and husband, Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Marie's name to one of two Oklahoma health causes she supported throughout her life: the Oklahoma Blood Institute or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
