ROBERT WHITAKER IS FIRST AUTO VICTIM OF YEAR IN THIS CITY
Jackson Man Fatally Injured When Struck By Car Sunday Evening;
Report Exoneration of Driver
C. M. Kerr, Gallipolis Driver
The first death by motor accident in 1935 was marked up in Jackson county Sunday night when Robert E. Whitaker, 58, for years a resident of this city, died in the Holzer hospital, in Gallipolis, from injuries received when struck by a car here earlier the same evening.
Whitaker died of a fractured skull.
Curtis Kerr, Gallipolis merchant, was the driver of the car which struck the Jackson man. Kerr was accompanied by Guy Clark, also of Gallipolis.
The accident occurred about 6:30 Sunday evening just at the Jackson city limits on the Chillicothe pike. Whitaker was walking toward town and was struck from behind by the Kerr machine. The driver immediately stopped brought the injured man into Jackson where he was examined by Dr. C. C. Fitzpatrick and then removed to the Holzer hospital in the Charles L. Wood ambulance.
According to reports late Monday, Kerr was absolved of all blame in the accident. The poor visibility caused by the drizzling rain at that hour is believed the chief cause of the mishap.
According to relatives of the deceased, the victim was returning from a visit to the home of relatives on route 11 when the car, approaching Jackson, hit him. The accident occurred exactly on the line marking the corporation line.
The body was returned to Jackson Sunday night and on Monday was taken to the home. Kerr returned to Jackson with members of the family following Mr. Whitaker's death.
The deceased was born in Portsmouth but spent almost his entire life in this city where he was widely known. He was employed at the Augur Bit factory here for more than twenty years.
He leaves besides his widow, a family of six sons, David, of Jackson, Duane, of Chicago, Robert, student at Ohio University, and Harold, Darwin and Walter, all at home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the home at 1:30 o'clock with Rev. W. H. Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery under the direction of Undertaker C. L. Wood.

No stone with Nellie or Robert Whitaker on it has been found. The stone pictured is near the stone of Harold and Jeanette Whitaker. Robert's death certificate says he was buried in Fairmount Cemetery, but there is no record of him there.
