Edward R. "Ed" Stewart, 65, of Windsor, Missouri, died Wednesday evening, April 7, 2021, at his home near Windsor.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday April 17, 2021, at the Windsor United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Warrensburg, Mo. The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 16, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor. Edward R. "Ed" Stewart, 65, of Windsor, Missouri, died Wednesday evening, April 7, 2021, at his home near Windsor.
He was born August 1, 1955, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Leland Rice Stewart and Marlene L. (Birket) Stewart. He played basketball in high school and graduated from University High in Warrensburg in 1973. He served 4 years in the United States Air Force following high school. When he returned to Missouri, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from Central Missouri State University (now UCM) in Warrensburg. Following college, he participated in his local 4-H Club and was later sent to Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, as an International Foreign Youth Exchange (IFYE) Student where he met the love of his life. Ed married Karen Ingrid Mahabir on August 1, 1981, in Trinidad.
Ed and Karen returned to the United States and worked for Ralston Purina as a District Manager from 1981-1984. They made their first home in Sedalia, MO, and later transferred to Carthage, Mo. The couple along with their two daughters moved back to Warrensburg in 1984, and Ed began a 34-year career in banking. He worked for UMB Bank in Warrensburg and then became the Windsor Vice President/Branch Manager in 1993. His career move necessitated the family's relocation to Windsor. Ed also worked for Sunflower Bank, Simmons Bank, and Equity Bank, retiring from banking in November 2018 as the Market President covering the Warsaw and Windsor locations. Ed and Karen co-owned and operated the Windsor Phillips Convenience Store for several years. In addition to banking, Ed was a cattle farmer and most recently was a part-time rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service.
Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sedalia and the Windsor IOOF Lodge. He was involved in many activities and supported several organizations in both the Warrensburg and the Windsor communities over the years including the Lions Club and the American Legion Post 82. He also served on the Windsor Senior Center Board. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, and playing golf, especially with his Dad.
Survivors include his wife Karen of the home; 2 daughters, Stephanie Graham (Jimmy), Overland Park, Kansas, and Kristie Kovalenko (Tim), Royal Air Force Lakenheath, Suffolk, England; 6 grandchildren, Gabriella and Jackson Graham and Christian, Jacob, Noah, and Anna Kovalenko; his mother, Marlene Stewart, Warrensburg, Mo.; a brother, Scott Stewart (Stephanie), Holden, Mo.; an uncle Richard "Dick" Stewart (Elnora), Watertown, South Dakota; an aunt, Joyce Holcomb (Dan), Tampa, Florida; a nephew John Stewart; two nieces, Shelby McDonald and Sydnie Stewart; and extended family in the United States and Trinidad. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Leland R. Stewart, and a brother, Leland Don Stewart.
