James Martin "Jim" Randall
1944 - 2021
Salem - Jim Randall, 77, of Salem, passed away, on the morning of April 5th, at Salem Hospital. He was born on March 7, 1944 to Hal and Pat Randall, and spent most of his life in Salem. Jim loved this city and was devoted to the community.
Jim was a proud member of North Salem High School's, class of 1962. He attended Southern Oregon College in Ashland, where he began his career in journalism, at the Ashland Daily Tidings and as a D.J. for KSHA Radio, out of Medford. In 1969, he returned to Salem, with his first wife, to work as a reporter for the Statesman Journal and later, became a news anchor, for Salem's Channel 3 News. Jim also worked for Senator Mark Hatfield, during his first campaign for re-election, to the United States Senate. It was during this time in 1972, that his daughter, Sarah, was born; followed by his daughter, Carrie, two years later. In 1973, Jim began a lengthy tenure with SAIF Corporation, where he eventually became Vice President of Corporate and Public Relations.
On August 25th, 1977, Jim married Cheryl, his wife of 43 years. The two met while participating in a local musical production of Sweet Charity. He also became a loving stepfather to her two children, Jennifer and Colin. In 1984, Jim moved his family to Lake Oswego and took a new position at Liberty Northwest Insurance, in Portland. However, he returned to his home town of Salem, in 1990, to work in Marketing and Public Relations for Salem Hospital. At that time, he participated in the 1990 Salem Leadership Program. In 2001, Jim left Salem Hospital, to fulfill his goal of owning his own, public relations company. He was soon joined by good friend, Bill Dixon, and Randall Dixon, Public Relations was formed. This same year, Jim realized his dream of serving his community, when he was elected to the Salem City Council. During his time on City Council, he was particularly proud to have been part of the initial planning for the Peter Courtney pedestrian bridge, which joins Salem's Riverfront Park and Minto Brown Island.
Throughout his life, Jim cultivated his love of the arts. He actively supported the Ashland Shakespeare Festival and the Pentacle Theater. He was instrumental in the, Save the Historic Elsinore Theater project and served on the Salem Art Board for several years, including serving as president of the Salem Art Fair and Festival, during its 50th anniversary. Jim was also an active member of Rotary, served on the Girl Scout Board of Directors and had recently completed 5 years as president, of the board for Capital Community Media.
In addition to his many civic and professional accomplishments, Jim was an avid fisherman and gardener. He had great appreciation for the natural beauty of Oregon and enjoyed spending time at the Oregon Coast. Jim loved to serve guests in his home and, if weather permitted, they were often treated to his famous grilled salmon. Throughout his life, Jim's greatest love was his family and he found tremendous joy in spending time with them all.
Jim is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his children, Jennifer (Tim), Colin, Sarah (Nino), and Carrie (Angela); his grandchildren, Will, Natalie, Joey, Allison, Charlotte, William, Thomas, and Benjamin; his sister, Carol; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim will be laid to rest at Belcrest Memorial Park, in Salem. The family is planning to hold a celebration of Jim's life, this summer.
