George LeMont Hamilton
October 10, 1934 - April 03, 2021 (age 86)

On Saturday, 4/3/21, George LeMont Hamilton, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 86 at his home in Mesquite, NV. He was born October 10, 1934 in Mountain View, WY to George Richard Hamilton and Phyllis June Durrant. He grew up on a ranch in between Riverton and Lander, WY that extended into the Wind River Indian Reservation. George was proud to claim his native American heritage through his great grandfather who was a full-blooded member of the Shoshone tribe. He graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in 1952. On January 27, 1996, George married Sherrie J. Henderson.

As a young man, George enjoyed competing in rodeos every weekend with two of his friends. He competed in saddle bronc and bareback. Between him and his friends, they often won enough money for their entry fees. He worked on a ranch where he learned at a very early age to herd cattle, branded them and castrated young bulls. After graduating from high school, he worked in the oil fields and logging. Later, he played football for Indiana University, afterwards he spent a summer training with the LA Rams.

George joined the United States Marine Corps on August 18, 1954 and was immediately sent to San Diego, California and on to Camp Pendleton. He was deployed March 19, 1955 and operated the big guns while stationed in Japan which resulted in a hearing loss. When he returned from the Korean Conflict, George worked with Caterpillar equipment, however; the company he was employed with wound up buying new Komatsus which he refused to operate. His hard-headedness cost him his job. When he returned home and his wife inquired as to why he was home early he told her he'd been fired and why. She said if he loved CAT so much why didn't he go to work for them. Thus began his 30+ years at Wheeler Machinery. He traveled the world visiting 6 of the 7 continents. George loved Alaska and spent a lot of time there after the completion of the Alaskan Pipeline; purchasing Caterpillar equipment for Wheeler, which was being auctioned off.

He loved golf and when he couldn't get a tee time he said he'd buy his own "damn" course, thus; he and Sherrie became co-owners of such. It became known as Hamilton Ranch Golf Resort where he worked tirelessly to make it an 18-hole golf course; also renovating the hotel, bar and restaurant. He invested all of his time and energy into its maintenance and operation until it was devastated by a 100-year flood in January 2005.

He is survived by his wife Sherrie and her children, Laurie Anne Henderson of Salt Lake City, UT; Jody Lynn Ekstrom (Rod) of Francis, UT; James Gabriel Henderson, III (Deidre), of Spanish Fork, UT; Angela Dawn Henderson of Salt Lake City, UT; and eleven grandchildren who lovingly called him "Grandpa George." When George married Sherrie he stepped into the role of father figure for her adult children and developed an affectionate relationship with each of them. In many ways, George was the Western version of their Southern father.

He was preceded in death by his father, George, in 1977, and his mother, Phyllis, in 1997.

A celebration of his life will be held at the former Hamilton Ranch Golf Resort (Beaver Dam Lodge) in Beaver Dam, AZ on Saturday, April 10, at 11:00 am. A graveside service will take place Monday, April 12 at 10:00 am at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander, WY. www.sumortuary.com
