Thomas White was born around 1846 in Rutherford, County, Tennessee. In June 1867, he enlisted in the United States Army in Columbia, Tennessee and was assigned to "H" Company of the 41st United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment. After consolidation of the 41st and 38th Infantry Regiments, Thomas served in "H" Company, 24th United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment until his honorable discharge on 10 June 1870. Thomas White died on 11 July 1916 in Gillett [formally named Riddleville], Karnes County, Texas.

"The 41st United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment was one of six segregated regiments formed on 28 July 1866, for peacetime service following the American Civil War. All the enlisted soldiers were black, either veterans of the United States. Colored Troops or freedmen. The 41st was consolidated on 1 November 1869, with the 38th United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment to create the 24th United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment. The consolidation took place at Fort McKavett, Texas. The Regiment's first commander was Colonel Ranald Slidell Mackenzie, also called "Bad Hand" (November 1869-December 1870). From its activation until 1898, the 24th served throughout the Western United States. Its missions included garrisoning frontier posts, battling American Indians, protecting roadways against bandits, guarding the border between the United States and Mexico."
