"The 41st United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment was one of six segregated regiments formed on 28 July 1866, for peacetime service following the American Civil War. All the enlisted soldiers were black, either veterans of the United States. Colored Troops or freedmen. The 41st was consolidated on 1 November 1869, with the 38th United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment to create the 24th United States (Colored) Infantry Regiment. The consolidation took place at Fort McKavett, Texas. The Regiment's first commander was Colonel Ranald Slidell Mackenzie, also called "Bad Hand" (November 1869-December 1870). From its activation until 1898, the 24th served throughout the Western United States. Its missions included garrisoning frontier posts, battling American Indians, protecting roadways against bandits, guarding the border between the United States and Mexico."
