He was a walking encyclopedia. There was never a conversation with him where you didn't learn something new.

He was generous, thoughtful, ornery, an all around badass who became softer and gentler with the birth of his beloved granddaughter.

He grew up in Marianna, Arkansas, living with his grandmother, Edna Coble McGee. He went to Henderson State and Memphis State University where he graduated. He held jobs on ships, building bridges, antiques, sales and finally owned his own pool supply franchise.

He treasured his friends as a teen and young man and had wild stories to tell, quite often, about their naughtiness and adventures.

He loved cars. He knew what kind of car and what engine it had, and all car details of every person he ever met.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay; his daughter, Meradith and her husband, Mark Hale; and the light of his life, his precious granddaughter, Carter Hale. He is also survived by a special cousin, Anna Marie Bailey Agee, one niece and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estel McGee and Goldie Johnston, his brother, Charles Wilburn McGee, Sr. and his sister, Patricia Louise McGee Boone Cooper; dogs Chink and Cocoa and granddog Oche. Granddog Pepper, who loved him dearly, also survives. He was also preceded in death by his lifelong best friend, Ken Eddleman, a loss he never recovered from.

But most of all, he was my daddy. He taught me to think for myself, to question everything, to be strong, to love knowledge and to seek it out, to explore things in nature, to learn to do things for myself, to tinker and find out how things work.

My heart is forever broken. He wasn't the type to say I Love You, but he showed it all the time. How will I live without you, my precious daddy.
