Thomas Gardner was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Mary Sparhawk and Isaac Gardner. He lived in Groton. Married December 10, 1789, Abigail Champney of Groton. Abigail was born May 4, 1767, at Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She died in 1805. They had seven children.

This Thomas Gardner is a nephew of Lucy Sparhawk Aspinwall (wife of Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall), Dr. William Aspinwall (wife Susannah Gardner), and is a nephew, a cousin, and/or an uncle to several others - both via Sparhawk and via Gardner, and then also Aspinwall by marriage.

• Son of Richard Starkweather and Sally C. Crossman Starkweather (daughter of Celia Carver and Ephraim Crossman, son of Martha Gachet and Robert Crossman).
• Grandson also of Richard Starkweather and Merab.
• Married Abigail Olivia "Abby O." Taylor,
daughter of Eben Taylor and Mary Gardner Taylor. Abby was a granddaughter of Abigail Champney and Thomas Gardner, of Groton. Thomas Gardner of Groton was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of Isaac Jr. and Mary Sparhawk Gardner.

Eben Taylor has ancestry that overlaps with that of his wife - the Flint / Flynt line via Hepzibah (Flint) Rice is same Flint family as the Flynt that married into the family of Reverend Samuel Newman. The Flynt who married Newman was brother of Hepzibah's direct ancestor.
