CLAYTON – Steve Jerome Powell, 50, a happy and special child of God, went home to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday.

He was born in Wake County and spent a happy childhood in Garner, playing basketball and even competing in the Special Olympics for several years. Steve loved giving hugs, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and playing with his building blocks of 40 years. Steve never met a stranger – he was pure light, love, and joy and was adored by everyone who knew him.

Steve is survived by his parents, Jo Ann Balboni (Henry) of Clayton, Jerry Powell (Sandy) of Cary, sister Annette Bakker (Jeff) and niece Danielle of Havelock, brother Johnny Powell (Becky), nephew Bridger, and niece Waverly of Cary.

The family wishes to say special thanks to Kim Shyllon and the loving staff of the Country Lane Group Home of Holly Springs.

Flowers welcomed, or memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics at support.specialolympics.org.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8th at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel, 211 W. Third St., Wendell with visitation from 2:00 – 2:50 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Central Baptist Church Cemetery.
