Walter Lincoln "Walt" Davidson was born August 29, 1922 in Lincoln, Nebraska and passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. At 98 years old, Walt was still as sharp as a razor.
Walt was the son of Walter L. and Minnie (Decker) Davidson. Walt was preceded in death by his mother and father, his first wife Anna. Walt worked hard and learned to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and to love people growing up. Somewhere along the way he became a great story teller.
After Pearl Harbor Walt walked from home in Nebraska and enlisted in the Navy. He became a Navy Corpsman(medic) assigned to the USMC unit that would become the 5th Raider Battalion. He became "Doc", the name stuck with him the rest of his life. Completion of the challenging training meant a lot to Walt. He loved his Marines and his job. The Battalion deployed to the Pacific. The Raiders were stood down and Walt went to A Company 5th Marine Regiment. He would participate in the bloodiest landing and subsequent battle in US history. Walt would see friends die, be wounded and simply be gone. He saved a number of Marines and was wounded himself. He was evacuated to a hospital ship, shortly returned to duty and served directly in multiple other landings through the course of the War. He participated in the Battle of Okinawa where he was wounded again. He returned home and like so many of his generation he would put the War aside and get back to his life. He delighted in stories of his experiences and his friends from his Service Days. Walt never forgot his friends from the War, both living and dead, celebrating them in story at every opportunity.
Walt married Anna (Fiorio) Davidson. They had two children, Patricia and Walter L. Davidson.
Walt drove a truck, operated tour business and enjoyed success in the years that followed. He gave narrated tours of Sedona, the Grand Canyon and other areas of interest. He always had an anecdote or story of wherever his tour was going, was at or had been. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all. He had a joy in life that he conveyed to everyone he met .
Walt was an active HAM radio operator, KC7OMZ, operating two radio nets, the Phoenix Downunder Net and the Made It Through the Night Weather Gang for over 20 years. His reach with the radio was worldwide touching Arizona, New Mexico and Australia with these nets. Walt's warmth and pleasant nature made everyone feel welcome on the radio and he had a vast circle of friends around the US and Australia from his radio adventures. He was a pillar of the morning radio community and will be greatly missed by all of his radio pals.
Walt was an active member of the Lions Club for over 50 years across the Scottsdale Los Amigos Desiertos and the Scottsdale Pride of Lions Club. Proudly serving in multiple positions and loving every minute of it. His Lions Club was one of the joys of his life.
Walt "Doc" touched everyone he met in positive and wonderful ways. His service to his Country and fellowman has touched so many people in so many ways that we don't understand and won't until we really understand he is gone.
Walt is survived by his wife, Nora Davidson, and her son Nicholas Minga, daughter Patricia Dean of Green Valley, Arizona, grandson Brannan, son Walter L. Davidson of Tucson, Arizona granddaughter Andee and grandson Kiefer. Additionally, Walt is survived by many friends throughout the United States and overseas.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 until 12:30 a.m., Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Pinnacle Peak Mortuary 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85255
Graveside services and internment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 8, 2021 at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024
Walter Davidson was a veteran of the United States Navy, he was a Navy Corpsmen that served during WWII. Walter served during the Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate II. It was fought between the U.S. and Japan during the Mariana and Palau Campaign of WWII, from September to November 1944 on the island of Peleliu. During this battle Walter was wounded and he received a Purple Heart for his wounds. It is our honor to stand in silent reverence as we show respect and gratitude to this hero for his sacrifices made for this nation.
