20th Governor of Montana. He served as the Governor of Montana from January 2, 1989 to January 4, 1993. He was originally from Canada and moved to Montana as a teenager. After serving with the U.S. Armed Forces Broadcast Network during the Korean War, he became involved in radio and eventually owned local stations. In 1969, he was elected to the Montana State Senate and served there for the next sixteen years. During his state senate tenure, he served as floor whip, majority leader, and senate president. In 1988, he ran, as a Republican, for the position of governor of Montana and was successful in the general election that November. He served as governor for the next four years before stepping down after declining to seek re-election in 1992.
