Barbara J Carpenter was born on January 5, 1951 and passed away on April 4, 2021 and is under the care of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.
Barbara Jacklyn Carpenter was the last child born to Leroy and Elverta (Rockemann) Carpenter in Humboldt, NE on October 5, 1951. She was born premature and had to spend time in an incubator before going home. She was named by her two oldest sisters Delores and Donna who were also involved in her care. As she got older, her siblings liked to tease her by calling her the "baby."
Upon graduating from Humboldt High School in 1969, Barb attended Peru State College for part of a semester and decided that wasn't what she wanted to do. AS she had three brothers and four brother in-laws in the service, she decided that this was what she wanted to do also and called a recruiter for the Army. Imagine her mother's surprise when she came home from work and found him sitting at the dining room table. After some discussion, Elverta signed the papers and Barb enlisted in May 1970. She took her 8 week basic training in Alabama at Fort McClellan which was definitely a change from living in Humboldt. Barb was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in Texas for her entire 6 years and 3 month career. She did many things during her first three year tour such as, instructing classes, in charge of the drug program and then became a drill instructor. After three years, Barb decided to reenlist for three more years hoping to travel somewhere but the only orders she received were to go to Germany which she didn't want since everyone else was doing that. Barb decided to go into a new field of psychology which she found to be quite an experience and with the rank, more responsibilities. After more than six years in the service, Barb decided to move on. She had no regrets and it was a great learning experience.
Barb moved back to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1976 where she started working at Cushman's. She started as an errand girl, driving a van while doing her errands. She worked up to Traffic Supervisor and was there for 19 years until Cushman's closed their doors. She then went to work for Lenco Inc. in Waverly doing the same work.
After moving back to Lincoln, Barb met her true love and best friend, Larry Graham. They were together for 27 years until Larry's unexpected death in 2002 form blunt force trauma from a fall. Barb continued to live in their house and work for a few years when her health started to fail and she was no longer mobile. She was in and out of the hospital and rehab for the last few years and was at Brookside Rehabilitation Center for the last two years. It was here, that Barb passed away on Easter Sunday April 4, 2021 at the age of 69 years after being on hospice for two days.
Barb loved Husker football, music (mainly oldies and country), the color purple, Larry's hamburgers, and being at home. Her one passion was cleaning as her family and friends can attest to. She was a very loving and caring person and would help anyone if she could.

A graveside service will be held at Lincoln Memorial, 6800 S. 14th St., Lincoln, NE on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 2:00 pm. Those attending will gather at Gate 2 and then proceed to the burial site. A reception will follow in the lower level of the funeral home. Masks will be required.
