At the time of his passing, James worked as a crop duster and had been employed by Booker Aviation in Eloy. A native of Ohio, he had lived in Stanfield, AZ for approximately a year and a half. A member of the U.S. Parachute Association, James was part of the U.S. Team winning first place in the World Championship Parachute Meet in Fort Bragg, N.C., August 1973. He died at the Casa Grande Municipal Airport during a recreational jump when his main canopy and reserve chute deployed simultaneously and became entangled.
