Lewis enlisted as a Private on 21 December 1863 in the 3rd Vermont Light Artillery Battery, credited to Charlotte, VT. The regimental rendezvous was at the old fairgrounds in Burlington, VT, from 24-31 December 1863. The unit was mustered into U.S. service on 1 January 1864. The battery was primarily located around Petersburg, VA, being involved in several actions, including the Battle of the Crater on 30 July 1864. He was discharged with his unit on 15 June 1865. He received his Invalid Pension Certificate #1097264 on 23 April 1904. Following his death, his wife received Widow's Pension Certificate #951097 beginning 14 April 1924
