US Congressman. Born in South Windsor, Connecticut, Sperry graduated from Amherst College in 1873, studied law, attained admission to the bar in 1875, and began a practice in Hartford. He served in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1876, and from 1883 to 1891 was Coroner of Hartford County. In 1890 Sperry was the successful Democratic nominee for the US House of Representatives and served two terms, 1891 to 1895. He ran unsuccessfully for a third term in 1894. In 1899 he served as Connecticut's Acting Attorney General, and in 1902 he was a Delegate to the state Constitutional Convention. Until his Sperry remained a leading member of the Connecticut bar until his death in South Windsor, including serving as Counsel to the Connecticut River Bridge and Highway Commission and serving from 1905 to 1917 as a member of the state Board of Health.
