CRESTON PAPER
JULY 2, 1927
SAMUEL D. WALLACE
Samuel D. Wallace was born June 16, 1841 in Jefferson county, Ohio, and died July 2, at his home in Creston. His early life was spent on a farm near Leon. The life of Mr. Wallace was one of unusual interest. He, in his later life, loved to relate incidents of his boyhood days, when he would lead the ox team of his father to break the sod for crops; of driving hogs to market to Ottumwa, the nearest railroad station. In his youth he received 50 cents a day for his labor.
In the year 1861, at the age of 21, Mr. Wallace was married to Bridget Daughton at Ottumwa, by the Rev. Father Kreckel. To this union 10 children were born, six having preceded him in death. Besides his aged widow he is survived by three sons, John and James of Platte township and one daughter Mrs. L. J. Cusack, of North Maple street. Mr. Wallace was a friend, a neighbor and a christian, in the fullest sense of the word, always ready and willing to lend a hand when needed.
With his family he moved to Union County 36 years ago, purchasing a farm a few miles from Creston where with his wife he resided until 23 years ago when they retired.
His body will be laid to rest in Calvary cemetery.
