Chan, as he was known best, retired from E.I. DuPont in Kinston and then worked with the Greene County Farm Service agency for 10 years. Never one to be idle, following his second retirement he worked as an adjuster with crop insurance. Chan was an avid outdoorsman and he loved, fishing, hunting and playing golf. He also served his country in the National Guard for ten years.
A Christian, Chan possessed a strong faith and was a member of Airy Grove Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, Chan was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Slater Tyndall.
His surviving family includes his wife, Mary Phillips Slater; daughters, Karen Slater Dixon and husband Timmy, Sylvia Slater Connor and husband Mickey, and Annette Slater Pridgen and husband Evans; grandchildren, Kerry Henning and husband Mark, Bradley Dixon and wife, Shelley, Morgan Davis and husband John, Alyssa Ferguson and husband Garrett, and Whit Connor and wife Marti; great-grandchildren, Brandon Beaman, Kayla Beaman, Noelle Dixon, and Savannah Davis; and a sister, Sarah McCoy Hurley.
Funeral services will be held 7 PM Friday evening, April 2nd, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with Reverend Nelson Killingsworth and Pastor Frank Rice officiating. Committal Services will follow at 11 AM Saturday, April 3rd, at the Mewborn Family Cemetery, on Mewborn Church Road in Greene County. Due to COVID, masks are requested to be worn.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening immediately following the service and other times at the Slater residence. Memorials in memory of Chan are suggested to Gideons International, 2716 Shawnee Place, Greenville, NC 27834.
