A funeral service with limited seating will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Hedrick's Grove Reformed United Church of Christ where he was a member, with Rev. William Sowers officiating. The service will be recorded and will online for viewing following the service. Covid-19 precautions of social distancing and wearing a mask will be required. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Gene will lie in state on Monday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington. The family will not be present.
Gene was born in Davidson County on June 29, 1928 to Brantley and Ethel Burkhart Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Victor Smith, and his sister-in-law, Ramona Smith.
He was a "Dixie Man" having worked at the former Dixie Furniture Company for over 47 years. When he was not at the Dixie, he enjoyed farming and was co-owner of Conrad Hill Feed & Seed. In his later years, he loved to have friends from his church and community visit him at his home and reminisce about who used to live or own land throughout the community. A highlight of each week was going with his friend, Jerry Poole, every Friday afternoon to run errands. He was a simple, hardworking good man. One of his main goals in life was to send his three children to college… his goal was accomplished! (Thanks, Dad!) He also served in the Army Reserves.
He is survived by his "beautiful" wife (as he referred to her each day), Theda Burkhart Smith, for 72 years; his children, Dan Smith (Gloria), Rhonda Underwood (Lee), and Pam Kanoy (Kirby); four grandchildren, Kelsey Smith, Preston Smith, Andrew Underwood (Stephanie) and Victoria U. Clay (Caleb); six great-granddaughters, Maya, Layla, Calli, Zoe, Izzy, Sara and the family dog, Gunner. We loved you very much and will miss you greatly.
