Carolyn Fuson Cope, age 90, passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 in Sevierville, Tennessee following a brief period of declining health.

Mrs. Cope was born February 8,1931 at Jellico, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Ruby Effie Baker Fuson, brother Joe Fuson and sister Laura Fuson Martin. Mrs. Cope was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-eight years, Rev. Dr. William Wayne Cope. Mrs. Cope is survived by their daughter Karen Cope Dawsey, Whiteville, North Carolina, their granddaughter Allison Dawsey Yezek, Charlotte, North Carolina and great-grandchildren Ava Carolyn Yezek and Mason James Yezek, Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by sisters Novella Fuson Phillips, Knoxville, Tennessee and Flo Fuson Martin, Bristol, Virginia and the extended Fuson and Cope families.
Mrs. Cope attended Jellico Elementary School, Jellico High School and then graduated from Rule High School, Knoxville, Tennessee. She gave her life to Christ as a young girl and was baptized at the First Baptist Church, Jellico, Tennessee. Mrs. Cope attended the University of Tennessee receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Home Economics, and Masters of Education. During her college Summers, she worked for Knox County Parks and Recreation as a Public Playground Coordinator to supervise group play. Mrs. Cope was a public school educator for over thirty years, beginning at Heiskell Elementary School in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her teaching career included: Jeffersonville Elementary School in Jeffersonville, Indiana; Clay County High School in Manchester, Kentucky; Cumberland County High School in Burkesville, Kentucky, and Sevierville Elementary School, where she taught seventh grade science to hundreds of Sevier county schoolchildren. She was very proud of her students and especially pleased to be able to watch them grow up and become contributing citizens of Sevier County. During the end of her educational career, Carolyn advanced to Sevier County School System Central Office Staff in conjunction with the Sevier County Sheriffs' Office as their D.A.R.E. Drug Program Coordinator.
Following the call of Dr. Cope to the ministry, Mrs. Cope was a faithfully devoted wife and helpmate to the church congregations he pastored. Together, the Copes ministry began at Bishopville Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee and spanned well over sixty years, ending at First Baptist Church, Pigeon Forge. Dr. and Mrs. Cope were devoted to each other, sharing the fervor and love for the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She worked earnestly, faithfully and unitedly with her husband to lead others to Christ. Mrs. Cope served in untold numerous positions, committees and service as a minister's wife. Many young lives were touched by her commitment to Sunday School in the Children's Division, Children's Choir, Acteens, Vacation Bible School, and annual Children's Programs. In 1992, she was inducted into the Sunday School Hall of Fame by the First Baptist Church, Pigeon Forge. Mrs. Cope was an Adult Choir member in each church during their ministry. Following her retirement, Mrs. Cope worked as a Community Volunteer with Tennessee Hospital Association of Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee and the Sevier County Senior Health Center.
As a part of her commitment and service in the community, Mrs. Cope was a member for fifty years of the Gamma Nu Chapter (Sevier County) of Delta Kappa Gamma - International Society for Key Women Educators. Mrs. Cope was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in the Spencer Clack Chapter. Mrs. Cope enjoyed being a member of the Sevier County Retired Teachers Association with her former colleagues. Mrs. Cope received the Sevier County Teacher of the Year Award for 1973-1974. Additionally, she was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Sevier County Youth Center "Kidsplace." Mrs. Cope was a member of the Pigeon Forge Community Chorus for many years which was founded and organized by her late husband. At the time of her death, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Special Friends and Neighbors who ministered with their unwavering kindness and support are Paulette and Marvin Manning, Bill Cole, J.B. Matthews, Sue Jane Ogle, Mary Jane and Ted Brackins, Lorene and Bill Barnes, Gail and Joe Thomas and Carol and Mike Grizzle. The family would like to extend a special gratitude of thanks to the UT Medical Center Hospice Services for their compassionate and professional care during this time. The family would like to also extend a special gratitude of thanks to the Atchley Family and Atchley Funeral Home.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Atchley Funeral Home led by Tim Martin including family Melinda Martin Nichols, pianist and with eulogies by Karen Cope Dawsey and Allison Dawsey Yezek. The family will receive friends before the memorial service from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm followed with the memorial service. Honorary Guests will be her Delta Kappa Gamma sisters and colleagues, Gamma Nu Chapter.
A Private Family Burial will be held on Monday, April 5, 2021 in the First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge Cemetery, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The Service of Committal will be lead by Karen Cope Dawsey.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge Cemetery Fund and Whiteville United Methodist Church Preschool, 902 Pinckney Street, Whiteville, North Carolina 28472.
