Rhode Island Governor. The son of another Rhode Island Governor, Henry Lippitt, he graduated from Brown University in 1865. He worked in the family textile manufacturing business and also as his father's chief of staff during his term as Governor from 1875 to 1877. He was the Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 1895 to 1897 and it was during his term, in 1896, that the cornerstone for the current Rhode Island State House was laid.
