Cleveland civic leader. Joseph L. Weatherly was a produce and coffee merchant who moved to Cleveland in 1837. He was one of the first fire department chiefs in the days when volunteers ran on foot with the horse drawn engines and pumped water by hand. Prominent citizens considered firefighting to be a civic duty. The first local fire boat was named JL Weatherly in his honor. He was also the founder and first president The Cleveland Board of Trade, predecessor of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. In 1863 he moved to Buffalo to run an insurance company and spent the rest of his life in that city.
