She was the daughter of St. Clair Augustin Mulholland, who was a Civil War Brevet Union General, and was a Medal of Honor recipient. She was also the granddaughter of Colonel Dennis Heenan, who's daughter was married to St. Clair Mulholland.
Her grandfather served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and her father served as the regiments Lieutenant Colonel. Both men were wounded in the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Dobbin and her husband raised 9 children.
