Although the record books show only 4 official first team games, as a member of the "Russell-Harris-Foss" half back trio which formed the backbone of the side in so many war time fixtures from 1942-45, his total number of appearances was over 70 and included two Football League (South) Cup Finals at Wembley in 1944 and 1945.

Robert signed for Notts County in the summer of 1948 and subsequently was briefly associated with Leyton Orient.
