Doloris Jean Carpenter, age 79 of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at her home.

Doloris was born on July 6, 1941, the daughter of Fred Jones and Hattie (Clemons-Denniston) Jones. Following high school, she furthered her education earning an Associates Degree in Cosmetology at the American School of Beauty in Des Moines.

In October of 1959, she was united in marriage to Richard Smithart. To this union, two children were born, Denise and David. The couple later divorced. In April of 1979, Doloris married Roger Millang. They divorced a short time later. In August of 1984, she was united in marriage to Everett Carpenter. The couple also divorced.

Doloris had many careers throughout her lifetime. She was a bookkeeper with Ruan Transportation in Des Moines and at Local Teamsters in Des Moines. Afterwards, she became a certified aide, and worked at the VA in Des Moines and at nursing homes in Indianola. Doloris was a teacher's aide for the mentally and physically handicapped. She worked for 15 years in the Des Moines Public School system. She also taught art and vacation bible school in Indianola for a period of time. Upon moving to Centerville, she was employed through Don Elen Motel for many years.

Doloris loved art. One of her biggest passions was painting. She painted on saw blades and so much more. She had an extensive artwork collection. Doloris also enjoyed lots of hobbies, including fishing, gardening, family gatherings and playing pool for the Gordie's Bar and Grill Pool League.

Left to cherish Doloris' memory are her daughter, Denise Smithart Olson of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Debra Smithart of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; three brothers and five sisters.

Doloris was preceded in death by her son, David Smithart; step father, Fred O. Jones; mother, Hattie (Clemons) Jones; and her three former husbands.
