Edgar George Smith was born in Iowa on September 20, 1933 to Daniel and Jeanette Laughlin Smith. He was named Edgar because of his mother's love of reading Edgar Allen Poe's work. He was a twin to his brother, Edward.
He moved to Success, Arkansas when he was seven years old. He attended a one-room school through the eight grade. He went to St. Louis at age sixteen to work for one year at a flour mill. He joined the Navy in 1950. He served twenty one and a half years. He was a SEAL for a two year period. After his retirement there he worked for Bay Area Rapid Transit in California before a second retirement in 1990. He was also a Mason and Shriner.
He moved back to Doniphan, Missouri in 1999 to be close to his twin. He met Carolyn White in 2001 and they married one year later. He became a member of the Delaplaine Church of Christ in August, 2005.
He is survived by his wife, brother-in-law, Bobby (Betty) Stevens, and sister-in-law, Betty (Charles) Bounds. Also surviving are nephews Terry, Bill and David Stevens, Jeff and Roger Bounds; two nieces, Anna Isgriggs and Tina Yawn. He is also survived by special friend/caregiver, Steven Holloway.
Visitation will be held Wednesday night at Heath Funeral Home from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held Thursday in the Heath Colonial Chapel at 1:00 pm with Denny Stormes officiating. Burial will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens. Frankie Rice, Gary DeVore, Tommie Garrett, Eli Murray, Berell Bounds, and Gig Pitcher will serve as pallbearers.
