*Mr. Gid Choate, of the Oakland country, who had a slight stroke of paralysis last week caused by getting too warm while at work, has about recovered and is now able to be out again. "Cadiz Record" April 23, 1908.
Gideon (Choat) Choate, 22 years old, Civil War. Mustered on July 6, 1861 with Co. B 24th Battalion Tennessee Division. Served under Colonel Manny as a sharpshooter 1861-1864.

The Tennessee 24th battalion sharpshooters was formed in May 1863 with 3 companies. The men were from Humphries County and included F. Maney's artillery battery. It was assigned to G.E. Maney's and Palmer's brigade. In April 1864, it consolidated with the 34th regiment. The unit participated in the various campaigns of the army of Tn. from Chickamauga to Atlanta. Moved with Hood into Tn. and was active in N.C. It reported 22 casualties of the 39 engaged at Chickamauga & totaled 48 men and 22 arms in Dec. 1863.
