Richard Torres, age 75, of Somerset passed away peacefully, on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the dear husband of Fernanda (Mateus) Torres to whom he was married to for 45 years.

Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Manuel and Stella (Barkan) Torres. A proud graduate of Bridgewater State University, where he earned his Bachelor and Master's degrees. Richard dutifully served his country with the United States Navy. Richard retired as a teacher for the Taunton Public School system after over 30 years of service in 2003. He loved history, cats, reading newspapers, doing crossword puzzles, and working in the garden. He was a caring and generous husband, father, Dindinho/Uncle Richard and Dziadziu.

Besides his wife, Richard leaves: his loving daughters, Michele Torres of Fall River and Kara Torres-Kilgannon and her husband Richard of Swansea; three grandchildren, Thijs Kilgannon, Sebastian Kilgannon, and Stella Kilgannon. He was the beloved Dindinho of Lori Gorman and her husband Dustin of Berkley , his favorite sister in law Judy Carvalho and his best friend Louis Carvalho. Richard will be dearly missed by all of his extended family and friends.

His family would like to thank the staff of Charlton Memorial Hospital especially the ICU nurses for their care and devotion to Richard during the past 2 weeks.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Richard's honor to the ICU unit at Charlton Memorial Hospital by writing a check to Southcoast Hospitals Group and mail it to: Southcoast Health Philanthropy, 101 Page Street, New Bedford, MA 02740. Please write on the check subject line “ Charlton ICU” so those funds can go directly to the unit that provided the wonderful care he experienced.

Due to the COVID pandemic, a private service was held on Wednesday, May 27th, from our Fall River Chapel followed by his burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Sunday, June 14th, in St. John of God Church, Somerset.
