He was born Nov. 26, 1943, in Rutledge, Ala., the son of Sanson and Sallie Holly Peterson, and had lived in Ohio since 1954.
Willie graduated from Leavittsburg High School and retired from General Motors after 30-plus years of employment.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he attained the rank of Petty Officer and served as a navigation specialist on the USS St. Paul and the USS Hollister during the Vietnam War. The USS St. Paul was in the film "In Harm's Way," and Willie got to meet John Wayne. He enjoyed watching television and streaming movies online.
Precious memories of Willie live on with three brothers, Tommie (Jackie) of Fairfax Station, Va., Richard (Mollie) of Warren and Shawn Peterson (Yolanda) of Penn Hills, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Jackie Peterson of Akron; and a host of nieces, nephews and their families, who loved him and remember him fondly.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Sanson and Sallie Peterson; and four brothers: Charles, Robert, Glenn and Larry Peterson.
Calling hours are 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home.
Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, where full military honors will be conferred.
Masks are required and social distancing practices will be observed.
