Elizabeth Margaret Biddle was born on March 6, 1833, in Woodbury, New Jersey, to Ann Paschall (Hopkins) and Joseph Biddle, Sr., a Quaker. Her father Joseph died when Elizabeth was just two and a half years old and two months before his son, also named Joseph, was born.

Elizabeth's mother, who lived to be 92, lived in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia and was a dressmaker and later ran a boarding house.

Elizabeth's brother Joseph served in the American Civil War (1861-1865) in the 104th infantry.

At age 33, on April 17, 1866, Elizabeth married 49-year-old Matthew Baird. Matthew had been married twice before and had six children at the time of their marriage. His first wife died in 1838, and his second wife died in 1863. Matthew and Elizabeth's marriage ended in divorce after three years and did not result in any children. "A divorce was approved on April 15, 1869, 'for reasons over which neither of the parties have control, and of a delicate nature.'" Matthew would remarry in 1871 and have five additional children.

Just two years after her divorce, on July 9, 1871, at age 38, Elizabeth died at her mother's home in Philadelphia and was buried in a plot purchased by her mother. Twenty-one years later, her mother was buried next to her.
