Born September 10, 1927 in Orrstown, PA, she was the eldest of eight children born to the late Dana and Myrtle B. (Dotterer) Porter.
She married Donald A. Barnes on January 25, 1947 in Hagerstown, MD. They made their home on South Mountain Road, Fayetteville, after they married and enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Mr. Barnes died on April 13, 1999.
When Dorothy was a young girl she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. She was admitted to South Mountain Restoration Center, at that time known as Samuel Dixon Hospital. She resided at the hospital for several years before being discharged. During that time she went to school there and learned to crochet and knit among many other skills. She also met her husband while she was a patient there. Later in her life she went to work at the Restoration Center and cared for others for 29 years, working as a nurse's assistant.
Dorothy always had a positive, sunny disposition, taking life as it came. She was a "giver" and never a "taker", who enjoyed spending time with her family.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Patricia Wagaman and her husband, Laverne "Butch" Wagaman of South Mountain; two granddaughters: Dawn Burger of Waynesboro and Sharon Miller and her husband, Wayne of Chambersburg, PA; three great-granddaughters: Shaelyn Phebus, Gillian Burger and Landrie Miller; four great-grandchildren: Cameron, Greyson, Lennon and Dylan; one brother, Earl Porter, Carlisle, PA; one sister, Erna Campbell of Holly Springs, PA; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: James Porter, Mary Johnson, Jean Varner, Dana Porter and Wanda Keck.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 2, 2021, in South Mountain Bible Church, 11275 South Mountain Road, Fayetteville, with Mr. Henry Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.
