Sullivan, Dorothy M., of West Islip NY, formerly of Somers NY, and prior to that of Dix Hills NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home on Tuesday March 23, 2021. Dorothy was born on September 23, 1928 in Brooklyn NY to the late Paul and Josephine Weireter. Dorothy's early years were spent in Pelham Bay NY where she loved to swim at the beach. Dorothy graduated from Saint Brendan's High School in Brooklyn NY in 1946 with a Regents Diploma. Following graduation, Dorothy worked at the New York Telephone Company in Brooklyn, and was eventually promoted to the advertising division in Manhattan. Dorothy married the love of her life in 1953 and established with him a home of love and warmth for their family. Dorothy provided a nurturing environment for their six young children, teaching values that led them all to happiness and success, while also inspiring curiosity and compassion. As the children grew, Dorothy enrolled in college to study nursing. Dorothy graduated from Farmingdale State College with a Life Sciences Associates degree in 1973. While working as a registered nurse, Dorothy completed her Bachelor of Science Degree at St. Francis College in 1977. Dorothy's 20 year nursing career was diverse: she worked at Smithtown General Hospital initially in Pediatrics, and later in the Intensive Care Unit. When Dorothy left the hospital, she provided home nursing care, and also taught nursing. Upon retirement, Dorothy turned to her love of art and pursued pottery, creating beautiful vases and urns. Dorothy also became a Eucharistic Minister; she administered the sacrament of Holy Communion regularly at a local nursing home. Dorothy touched many lives with her kindness and generosity. She dearly loved her family, friends, and Catholic faith.
.
Dorothy loved art, music, traveling the world, reading, and playing card/board games. Dorothy was an active member of her church throughout her life and regularly volunteered in her community.
