William E. "Bill" Fitzgerald, 86, of McAlester, died Thursday, March 25, 2021 in McAlester.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2021 at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by Rev. Janie Knoch. Burial will follow in Crowder Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Heath-Fitzgerald, Matthew Heath Fitzgerald, Jimmy Shaw, Andrew Gregory, Bob Bradford, and Edward Fitzgerald.

William was born to Billie Bob and Jewel Perry (Vaughn) Fitzgerald on April 19, 1934 in Sapulpa. He attended Sapulpa schools and worked on a ranch in his younger years.

Bill met Vera Harris in Pershing and they were married on November 3, 1952 in Bartlesville.

He served as police officer and chief of police in Barnsdall in the late 1960's and early 1970's. He worked for Texas Oil and Gas Company while living in Creek County before moving to McAlester in 1984. In 1986, Bill and Vera moved to Crowder where they owned and operated the Diamond Steak House before moving back to McAlester in 2006. Bill also worked as a construction superintendent for Sonat Oil and Gas from 1984 to 1992 in Ft. Smith and McAlester.

Bill enjoyed fishing and cooking, and he loved John Wayne movies. He had attended Grace Temple in Crowder.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents: Billie Bob and Jewel Fitzgerald, wife: Vera Fitzgerald in 2007, grandson: Edward Lee Shaw, sister: Iva Pearl Gann, and father-in-law and mother-in-law: Willie and Dovie Harris.

He is survived by his daughters: Virginia Fitzgerald, Barbara Fitzgerald, Wanda Shaw and husband, Lee; son: Leonard Fitzgerald and wife, Monta, all of McAlester; grandchildren: Jason Heath-Fitzgerald and husband, Matthew Heath-Fitzgerald of McAlester, Jimmy Shaw and wife, Natalie of Indianola; Sarah Smith and husband, Casson of McAlester; great-grandchildren: Ethan Shaw, Mackenzie Shaw, Alexander Smith; brother: Clifford Fitzgerald and wife, Juanita of Tulsa; sister: Cordie Wilson and husband, Don of Muskogee; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
